Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Scioscia will return as manager in 2016
Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia announced his intention to return as skipper in 2016 at a press conference today introducing new general manager Billy Eppler.
Scioscia had been at the center of growing speculation concerning his future. In 2009 he signed a ten-year contract extension with the Angels with the chance to opt out after the 2015 season. When former GM Jerry Dipoto resigned back in July, reports indicated that rising tension between him and Scioscia was to blame. The two had clashed before over the years.
Some thought Scioscia might seek a fresh start himself, but it appears that will not be the case. He has helmed the Angels since 2000. Returning to the dugout for his 17th season with the franchise will ensure that he remains Major League Baseball’s longest-tenured manager.
The Halos experienced a largely up-and-down campaign in 2015, but they made a late surge in the AL West and Wild Card races. They went 20-11 down the stretch to finish at 85-77, three games behind the Rangers in the division and only one game shy of the Astros for the second Wild Card berth.
The team will look to build on its strong finish as it turns its attention toward 2016, and it appears the very familiar face of Mike Scioscia will again be leading the way.
