Pittsburgh Pirates’ Sean Rodriguez unleashes fists of fury on water cooler
It’s safe to say Pittsburgh Pirates utility man Sean Rodriguez did not have the most peaceful of evenings.
He received the start at first base in the National League Wild Card Game against the Chicago Cubs but was subbed out in favor of Pedro Alvarez in the third inning before getting an at-bat.
But that wouldn’t prevent him from making a memorable impact on the night’s proceedings. When Pirates reliever Tony Watson hit Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta with a pitch (presumably in response to Arrieta plunking two Pirates batters earlier in the game) in the seventh inning, both bullpens and benches cleared. A brief but tense stand-off ensued between the two clubs.
The situation cooled off, but Rodriguez was ejected for his role in the skirmish. He returned to the dugout before departing, where he decided to go a few rounds with a water cooler:
Now there’s a water cooler beatdown that would make even Paul O’Neill blush.
