Blue Jays fan arrested after baby hit with beer

Sometimes, sheer stupidity gets in the way of fandom. That was the case Wednesday evening at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Toronto police have made an arrest in connection to a Blue Jays fan who appeared to hit a baby with a beer can after a highly controversial call in game five of the ALDS.

Via its official Twitter account, Toronto police announced that charges are expected.

The issue arose after the Texas Rangers were credited with one of the most unusual runs baseball fans will ever see. With two outs and a runner on third in the top half of the seventh inning in a tie ballgame, Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin attempted to toss the ball back to the pitcher, but the ball ricocheted off Shin-Soo Choo’s outstretched bat and rolled down the foul line. Rougned Odor, who was on third, scampered home to score the go-ahead run amidst all the controversy and the run was upheld by the umpires after a lengthy discussion and review.

Blue Jays fans were seen throwing food and drinks onto the field after the run was allowed, including some tossing items from the upper deck.

The Blue Jays came back to win the game 6-3 thanks to three consecutive errors in the bottom half of the seventh by the Rangers and Jose Bautista’s three-run blast. They will face the Kansas City Royals in the ALCS, beginning Friday.

It’s okay for fans to be angry at a call or voice their displeasure. But it’s not okay to throw garbage on the field, let alone at a critical time in a playoff game. And it’s certainly not okay to be hitting babies with beer cans.

Have some class, people. Don’t let your fandom turn into stupidity.
