Detroit Tigers outright infielder Josh Wilson
The Detroit Tigers outrighted infielder Josh Wilson as expected on Thursday, granting the 34-year old journeyman free agency. While spending most of his time with Triple-A Toledo, Wilson did play 21 games with the big league club in 2015, posting 12 hits and five RBI in 41 plate appearances.
Wilson’s numbers in Toledo perhaps better reflect his current ability with a larger sample size, as he put up a .252/.316/.347 triple slash, amassing 3 HR, 30 RBI and 66 hits in 79 games for the Toledo Mud Hens.
While possessing a rather pedestrian bat and an alarming lack of power, especially for a corner infield spot, Wilson’s infield versatility and experience throughout the league at all levels should lead the nomadic infielder to a destination somewhere this offseason, most likely on a minor-league deal to a team searching for organizational depth, similar to the contracts he has signed with both the Rangers and Tigers in recent years.
Wilson has played in parts of eight MLB seasons with nine different clubs since his debut with the Marlins in September 2005.
