MLB.com’s Jane Lee reported Thursday that Oakland Athletics pitcher Drew Pomeranz successfully underwent clavicle resection surgery. He is expected to be ready in time for Spring Training, and will go through a recovery process of approximately six weeks.
Lee noted that Pomeranz, 26, pitched throughout this season with shoulder discomfort. The surgery is expected to correct any structural trouble in his shoulder.
Pomeranz, a promising southpaw, was selected fifth overall by the Cleveland Indians in the 2010 amateur draft. However, he is just 14-24 in his career on the mound. However, Pomeranz has shown steady improvement since his first full year in the majors with the Colorado Rockies, in which he compiled a 2-9 mark. This past season with the A’s, he went 5-6 with a 3.66 ERA over nine starts.
Pomeranz’s one-year contract worth $518,000 expired at the end of this year. He is arbitration eligible for the 2016 season. MLB Trade Rumors contributor Matt Swartz is projecting a $1.3 million salary for Pomeranz during the arbitration process.
