Orioles to be contenders for free agent Domonic Brown
The Baltimore Orioles reportedly have “limited interest” in free agent outfielder Domonic Brown, MASN reporter Roch Kubatko said Tuesday. Brown, 28, was removed from the Philadelphia Phillies 40-man roster earlier this year. With Travis Snider and Alejandro De Aza having not panned out in Baltimore, it makes sense for the team to kick the tires on Brown, a former All-Star in 2013.
In his lone All-Star season, Brown batted .272 with 27 home runs and 83 RBI for the Phillies, but his numbers have dropped considerably since. The following year, he finished with just 10 home runs and 63 RBI and this past season, was removed from the roster after 63 games.
Brown, a 20th round selection of the Phillies in the 2006 amateur draft, had high prospect hopes and burst onto the scene in his first full season with the team (2013).
Despite his low career batting average of .246 and an on-base percentage barely above the .300 mark, Brown is not a high strikeout player. However, since 2013, his power stroke has seemed to diminish rapidly. He has consistently been hitting weak fly balls and choppers.
Clearly, Philadelphia was a good starting spot for Brown. He got to showcase his potential there. But after a few years of struggling at the plate, it’s time to move on. Maybe a change of scenery will be best.
