Pittsburgh Pirates decline option on Radhames Liz
After seeing big league action in 2015 for the first time since 2009, right-hander Radhames Liz will now be a free agent, as the Pittsburgh Pirates declined his club option on Thursday.
The 32-year old has limited MLB experience, spending time with the Baltimore Orioles from 2007-2009, where he posted a 7.50 ERA in 28 games, 21 of which were starts. Liz was then absent from the MLB for six years, where he bounced around minor league systems and spent time playing in Korea, before finding his way with the Pirates in 2015.
Liz appeared in 14 games for the Bucs in 2015, going 1-4 with a 4.24 ERA, striking out 27 in 23.1 innings pitched. Liz’ high maximum velocity and proven strikeout numbers should prove to be valuable for several teams looking.
The right-hander was later designated for assignment by the Pirates, prompting him to accept an assignment to Triple-A, where he would spend the rest of 2015. Liz may spark interest in several teams looking for bullpen depth, and would certainly be a low risk pickup for any team looking.
With the everlasting need for flame throwing relievers, Liz could certainly find himself on a minor league deal to organizations looking for bullpen depth, including the Colorado Rockies, Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers. With Liz seeing time in the majors last season, a primary focus will be to work on his command and fastball control, two improvements that could make Liz a very dangerous reliever.
