White Sox non-tender Tyler Flowers

The White Sox have non-tendered catcher Tyler Flowers, MLB.com’s Scott Merkin reported.

Flowers, 29, who has spent the entirety of his seven-year MLB career in Chicago, has been reliable behind the plate for the Sox, but struggled offensively. His on-base percentage has finished below .300 each season since 2011.

This past year, Flowers batted .239 with nine home runs and 39 RBI, although his defense remained solid. Flowers’ career fielding percentage over 411 games as a catcher is .994.

Flowers was drafted in the 33rd round of the 2005 amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves, but never suited up at the big league level. He was shipped to the White Sox in a seven-player deal in December 2008.

The White Sox seemingly found themselves a new catcher in Alex Avila, signed last week. The former Tiger saw his role diminish in Detroit with the emergence of James McCann. In 2011, Avila was named an All-Star and Silver Slugger. He finished that season with a .295 batting average with 19 home runs and 82 RBI.

The club also non-tendered pitcher Jacob Turner after he was claimed off waivers from the Cubs in October.
