Corey Seager enters the 2016 season as the obvious Rookie of the Year favorite in the National League.

Corey Seager, MLB.com’s top-rated prospect, is in line for a huge 2016 season for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Corey Seager usurped Jimmy Rollins as the starting shortstop late in the 2015 season, and his promotion carried into the playoffs. Regarded as a mega-prospect, Corey Seager looks to dominate National League pitching with his smooth-swinging approach at the plate.

Last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Corey Seager excelled at the plate, positing a stellar .337/.425/.561 slash line. Showing that he was ready for Major League pitching, Corey Seager demonstrated why he was regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball. Also, Seager is among one of the best up-and-common shortstop wave, with Francisco Lindor, J.P. Crawford, and Carlos Correa showing huge potential.

Entering the 2016 season, the shortstop job for the Los Angeles Dodgers is Corey Seager’s to lose. No one on the Dodgers presents a real threat to start over Corey Seager, so he figures to see a large workload in 2016. Fangraphs’ Steamer suggests that Corey Seager will hit .265, with 16 home runs and 66 RBI; however, that seems like the floor for Seager’s first full season in the MLB.

Outside of Corey Seager, the National League Rookie of the Year candidates looks thin, with no real threats to outplay the future superstar shortstop. Perhaps, Trea Turner and Steven Matz present stiff competition in the upcoming season, but Seager is easily the favorite to top them entering the 2016 season.

More from Call to the Pen

With a smooth swing and advanced eye, Corey Seager figures to hit 18-plus home runs, with 70-plus RBI and a .280 batting average. Corey Seager’s skill-set is beyond his years, so with a solid approach at the plate, he should not struggle to get on base at a high clip. Seager should not endure the struggles like Joc Pederson last season, because Seager’s swing has less holes in it. Moreover, Corey Seager manages to make solid contact, with a line-drive approach.

Corey Seager managed to walk 14 times in 98 at-bats last season, helping him to hold a .425 on-base percentage, nearly 100 points higher than his batting average. While Corey Seager does not project to hit in the top-third of the Dodgers’ lineup out of the gate, if he comes out swinging, Corey Seager is a potential number-two hitter next season.

  • The Los Angeles Dodgers failed to create enough noise on offense; however, Corey Seager provided a boon late in the 2015 season. Also, Seager continued his torrid start in the playoffs, and he was one of just a couple Dodgers to produce in the playoffs. If Corey Seager plays to his potential, he is a sure-fire bet to win the N.L. Rookie of the Year Award.

Unless Steven Matz or Trea Turner put together a solid season, no one comes close to catching Corey Seager next season. He is the runaway favorite, and Seager should be one of the most productive players in the Dodgers’ lineup next season. Expect great things out of Corey Seager for years to come, and he has the potential to be a key franchise player for the Dodgers.

The Los Angeles Dodgers need for Corey Seager to provide solid production in 2016, but he should live up to the billing. Corey Seager could provide an outstanding season, like Carlos Correa in 2015. While Seager does not have much speed, he should be able to carry his weight with an impressive slash line, on-base percentage, and great home run/RBI totals.

Picking Seager for N.L. Rookie of the Year is one of the safer bets in baseball for 2016. No one presents a real threat. Trea Turner is no where near the hitter as Seager, and Matz would have to pitch incredibly to overtake an everyday position player. My money is on Corey Seager for N.L. RoY.
