Colorado Rockies Shortstop Jose Reyes to Learn Fate Soon

Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has been on paid administrative leave since his arrest for domestic violence in November. He may learn his fate in the next week.

Jose Reyes was not expected to be with the Colorado Rockies for long after he was acquired as part of the package that sent Troy Tulowitzki to the Blue Jays. As the Rockies were in a bit of a rebuild, the hope was that Reyes would rebuild his trade value and be moved in the offseason. Instead, he struggled in Colorado, posting a .259/.291/.368 batting line while stating that he did not want to be with the Rockies.

After his arrest for domestic violence in November, Reyes lost any trade value he may have had. With his indefinite paid administrative leave, and questions about when he would return to the field, his value was at its lowest point. Although he eventually would not face charges due to his wife refusing to cooperate, that did not mean he would avoid punishment.

Now it seems that Reyes will learn his fate soon. Reyes is reportedly likely to face his punishment soon, putting this saga to an end. At least, in theory. Once his punishment is handed down by Rob Manfred and Major League Baseball, the suspension would end the story, leaving Reyes free to continue his career once that punishment has ended.

But what then? The Rockies have Trevor Story at short currently, and he is currently tied for the major league lead with ten home runs. Brendan Rodgers is one of the Rockies top prospects, and while he is currently blocked by Story, could provide an excellent trade chip. There does not seem to be a place for Reyes in Colorado any longer.

But where would he go? Due another $44 Million through 2017 and with a $4 Million buyout of his option for 2018, it is unlikely that any team would be willing to take Reyes on without a significant portion of his salary being paid by the Rockies. Likewise, any expected return would be minimized.

It may be that Reyes continues his time in Colorado. While shortstop and second base are filled, the best option may be to turn Reyes into a utility player, someone that can play around the infield while attempting to rebuild his value.
