After their spectacular World Series run, the Kansas City Royals have been just average this season.  The offense has yet to kick itself into gear, and the back-end of the pitching staff is struggling.  So, a trade with the rebuilding San Diego Padres may be just the solution.

It may seem ludicrous that the San Diego Padres would trade Wil Myers in the midst of his rebound season, but the Kansas City Royals may be able to offer up enough talent to steal him away. The Royals currently rank 27th in the league in runs scored with 102 – and Myers could change that.  With Eric Hosmer at first base, the Royals would need to shift Myers back to right field, but it’s likely he’d be capable of re-adapting.

This season, Myers is hitting .281/.314/.469 with six homers, and while he’s fallen off with a .214 average in his last seven games, the Royals seem to be just the team to aid his turnaround.  One area of concern is his lack of walks and high strikeouts, but the Royals were able to fix Mike Moustakas, so the same could be done for Myers.  Jarrod Dyson has struggled as a starter this season, and the Royals are in desperate need of a power surge.  Without a big contract attached to him, Myers could be the perfect fit.

On the pitching side of things, Chris Young and Kris Medlen haven’t worked out in the rotation – and the rotation as a whole is composed of all right-handers.  Adding the resurgent Drew Pomeranz would fix the back of the rotation and give the squad some much needed southpaw action.

This season, Pomeranz has been excellent after dealing with injuries the past few seasons.  The 27-year-old has a 2.12 ERA with a 2.84 FIP in six starts on the season.  He’s also striking out more batters than ever before with a 10.85 K/9, while limiting home runs that have plagued him in the past.  One concern is his tendency to walk batters, but that’s something the Royals staff can work on.

In return, the Padres would be seeking a moderately high package in return.  The Royals have plenty of talent in their farm system, and could make a trade without giving up prized infielder Raul Alberto Mondesi.

A package of top pitching prospect Kyle Zimmer, infielder Cheslor Cuthbert, third baseman Hunter Dozier and lefty Foster Griffin could be enough.  Zimmer has high upside and would give the Padres a top starter in a couple seasons, Cuthbert has some pop and walks as much as he strikes out, Dozier is a former first round pick and Griffin could be a number two or three starter.

Here’s a look at their stats this season.

With the Padres already out of contention, adding four potentially top level talents may be too enticing to hold onto Myers.  As for the Royals, two of their biggest issues could be solved without giving up all of their top young talents.
