New York Mets: Terry Collins Taken to Hospital Before Sunday’s Game
The New York Mets held a media session on Sunday, announcing Manager Terry Collins was taken to a hospital after feeling ill.
Just prior to the start of the New York Mets game in Milwaukee against the Brewers, the Mets alerted media that an announcement was coming. According to Adam Rubin of ESPN.com, Mets Assistant general manager John Ricco announced Mets’ manager Terry Collins was being taken to a hospital.
The Mets sent Collins, 67, to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee as a precaution after he was examined by team Doctors from both the Mets’ and Brewers’ staffs.

According to Marc Carig of Newsday, Ricco said, “I was just with Terry [before Sunday’s game], he was alert and fine. [He] just wasn’t feeling well before the game, so we’re going to have some tests run.”
Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News reports Collins will remain in the hospital overnight, but says the Mets’ concern is, “not high.” Ackert also reported that Collins was feeling light headed when he was sent to the hospital. While Collins won’t be discharged from the hospital on Sunday, the situation does seem precautionary all around, which is good news for Collins and the Mets.
As of Sunday night, Mets Assistant general manager John Ricco said it is “too early to tell” if Collins will be able to manage on Tuesday. The Mets have Monday off, and then open a three-game series at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday.
In Collins’ place, bench coach Dick Scott took over to manage the Mets on Sunday. If Collins cannot manage on Tuesday, Scott would presumably fill in once again. At 67 years-old, Collins is Major League baseball’s oldest active manager. Collins took over as Mets’ manager in 2011, after two prior managerial stints. Collins also managed the Houston Astros from 1994-1996, and the Los Angeles Angels from 1997-1999.
As of Sunday, the Mets, under Collins’ tutelage, are 34-28. New York is sitting 4 games back of the division-leading Washington Nationals. Collins and the Mets are the defending National League champions.

As for the Mets, they struggled for much of the game on Sunday against the Brewers. Milwaukee starter Zach Davies threw a gem. At one point, Davies retired 17 Mets hitters in a row before surrendering a double to Kelly Johnson in the top of the seventh inning. Davies completed six innings, giving up just three hits while striking out seven. He allowed just one run. The Mets were able to add two runs in the top of the eighth, but couldn’t complete the comeback, falling to the Brewers 5-3. The Mets ended their 10-game road trip with a 5-5 record.
