The New York Mets have quite a stockpile of young arms in the Majors. Steven Matz added to that collection when he had a truly impressive debut on this day last year.
Steven Matz had attracted a lot of attention heading into the 2015 season. After dominating during his two and a half years in the Mets system, Matz was recognized not only as one of the New York Mets top prospects, but one of the top prospects in baseball. As he continued his dominance in the minors, it seemed a matter of time before he would get his chance in the Majors.
That opportunity came along at this time last year. Called up on June 25th as the Mets decided to go with a six man rotation, Matz made his debut on June 28. During that outing, Matz showed his all around potential, as he stifled the Reds in a 5-2 victory.

Matz would throw 7.2 innings, allowing two runs on solo home runs from Brandon Phillips and Todd Frazier in the victory. He scattered a total of five hits and issued three walks while striking out six. Matz also impressed with the bat, going 3-3 with a double and driving in four runs. It was truly an impressive debut for the young pitcher.
Even though he would only make one more start before being sent to the minors once again, Matz impressed during his stint with the Mets in September as well. He carried that momentum into this year, pitching well despite his elbow issues that have cropped up recently. Hopefully, he will continue to pitch well despite that bone chip in his elbow.

Another one of the New York Mets young starters, Steven Matz made his presence felt when he made his debut on this day last year. At only 25 years old, he would seem to have a bright future ahead of him.
