Joe Maddon is one of the most successful managers in Major League Baseball, and also one of the most unique. What makes the Chicago Cubs skipper one-of-a-kind?

There are tens of thousands of athletic coaches all over the world, and all of them have their flaws. Baseball managers are no different; they scream, they throw dirt and bases, and are forced to leave the field of play more often than you would think. They also have great traits; they encourage players and bring out the best in their team.

Over the course of his career, Joe Maddon has been a clash of all kinds of traits, both good and bad. He has gotten fined for bad-mouthing umpires, and has been praised for his excellent skills in being motivational and confident in his players.

There are a lot of different qualities that make Maddon as unique a manager as he is. His attitude, emotion and charisma all at different times are both good and bad. When he bad-mouths those umpires, it is certainly not a great look for him and the team, yet his ability to keep his players relaxed and confident in the highest pressure scenarios is one of the best among all professional coaches. The way in which he goes about every part of baseball is highly distinguishable from other managers.

All of these qualities make Maddon such a distinct and noticeable manager. Let’s examine the top three qualities that make him that kind of manager, and how they are both positive and negative.
