1985: Mets and Braves Play 19 Innings

On the Fourth of July in 1985, the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves fought through two rain delays and each other in a game which went 19 innings and ended at around 4 A.M. Eastern Time.

It was a high scoring affair, and in the top of the thirteenth inning the Mets broke through and took at 10-8 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, however, the Mets gave up a two-run home run to .060-hitting pitcher Rick Camp that tied the game. In the top of the nineteenth, the Mets exploded for five runs, but the Braves could only respond with two. The Mets won the game 16-13 at 3:55 A.M.

Six minutes later, at 4:01 A.M., the postgame fireworks came on. Because it was so late that night, many local residents called the police as they thought the city was under attack.

This was an especially memorable game because of the drama caused by the rain delays as well as the long extra inning battle that took everything out of both teams.
