Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik

Every MLB All-Star Celebrity Softball Game needs celebrities who have some connection to the host city.

I realize that the sitcom The Big Bang Theory is past its expiration date. In TV lingo, the show “jumped the shark” a few years ago. There are only so many times you can have a sitcom couple get together, break up, get back together, break up again, and so on. They also might want to give some other former Star Trek actors besides Wil Wheaton some guest appearances.

I also realize Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik are two people, but they form the couple known as ShAmy on the show, so I’m counting them as one person for my purposes.

Despite being in its declining years, the show is still on TV and these two stars have links to San Diego. Jim Parsons plays Sheldon “You’re in my spot” Cooper and Mayim Bialik plays Amy “Don’t call me Blossom” Farrah Fowler. Parsons attended grad school at the University of San Diego in 1999. While in the program, he was one of seven students accepted into a special two-year course in classical theater. Maybe he can use his acting skills to give off the appearance of an acceptable softball player.

Mayim Bialik was born in San Diego. She was the child star of the TV show Blossom that my sister used to watch and that had the incredibly annoying Joey Lawrence, who played a character named, appropriately enough, Joey. It was a real stretch of acting brilliance. His main skill was good hair and the ability to say, “Whoooaaah!”

The best part about having Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik playing in the celebrity softball game would be their complete lack of athletic ability. At least, I’m guessing they aren’t very good at sports, just based on the characters they play. That may not be fair, but I’m going with it. One of the joys of watching celebrities play softball is seeing them swing and miss, throw awkwardly, and not know the rules of the sport, like tagging up on a ball in the air. Watching Jim Parsons and Mayim Bialik play softball could be hilarious.
