The St. Louis Cardinals, as per usual, are a well rounded team this season. However, they have glaring weaknesses in the bullpen.

As per Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the Redbirds will be looking to shore up the back end of the bullpen before August 1.

Right now, with palpable rumors swirling that the Yankees could be sellers, one would have to think a number of teams are eyeing the likes of Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller.

The current situation the Cardinals find themselves in has them competitive for an NL wild card berth. Assuming none of that changes drastically in roughly a month’s time, management would like to find another relief arm capable of stepping into a late innings role or potentially even in the ninth to close out ball games.

Former All-Star closer Trevor Rosenthal has been unlike himself this season. After reaching 45 saves in both 2014 and 2015 with sub 3.00 FIPs, Rosenthal has sported an ERA that has gradually gotten worse over the course of the last 30 days. It was 3.71 on the first day of June and now sits at 5.28.

Manager Mike Matheny removed him from the closers role in late June and put into place 33-year-old rookie Seung-hwan Oh. As well, Kevin Siegrest is currently on the 15 day DL with mononucleosis. Though he should be back right after the All-Star break, St. Louis is likely to be buying a bullpen arm down the stretch.
