Chicago White Sox Promote Carson Fulmer to Pitch From Bullpen
To begin their second half, the Chicago White Sox have called up their top pitching prospect, Carson Fulmer, to throw from the bullpen.
The Chicago White Sox have called up Carson Fulmer to pitch from the bullpen. His availability begins today as Chicago heads to Anaheim to face the Los Angeles Angels. Originally reported by Dave Williams of Barstool Sports, Fulmer’s promotion follows the outright removal of Scott Carroll from the 40-man roster.
According to MLB.com, Fulmer was ranked as the 33rd best prospect on their Top 100 Prospects list. He was also ranked as the eighth best right-handed pitching prospect overall. After being picked eighth overall in the 2015 MLB Draft, Carson Fulmer sailed through the minors, much like his South Side counterparts Chris Sale and Carlos Rodon.
In Baseball America’s recent Top 100 Prospects update, they ranked Fulmer as the 73rd prospect in all of baseball, saying, “Scouts are getting more and more convinced now that his future role is as a high-energy late-inning reliever.”

While he saw success in the minors in 2015 – dominating in Chicago’s Rookie League and Class-A affiliates with a 2.05 ERA over 22 innings pitched – he has struggled with his command in 2016.
During his stint with Chicago’s Double-A affiliate, Fulmer posted a 13.0 percent walk rate in seventeen starts. This is up from last year when he finished his season with a 10 percent walk rate over eight starts.
However, his last three outings have been classic Fulmer. In 19 innings pitched, he has only allowed two earned runs and has tallied 22 strikeouts. He also pitched a perfect inning in the Futures Game during the All-Star break. Throwing from the bullpen will allow him to use his arsenal against major league hitters.
During Spring Training, Fulmer’s fastball averaged 95 mph and his curveball had huge breaking action.

Should he prove to be a success out of the ‘pen, Chicago hopes to eventually place him in the rotation as a number-two starter because of his ability to go deep into games. If that does not come to fruition, his aggressive pitching style and selection of offerings would make him an electric addition to the bullpen.
