The Houston Astros, who are looking for some more offensive punch, will call up top prospect Alex Bregman before Monday’s game vs the New York Yankees

The Houston Astros have been called the team of the future. After reaching contention one year early and then rebounding after a tough start this season, the Astros have come roaring back and are again in contention for a playoff spot.

They have been looking for more production out of their corner infield spots. They signed Cuban defector Yulieski Gouriel, but he has yet to obtain a work visa so he can’t start playing yet in the minor leagues. Instead of going out and getting a bat, they are going to promote one instead.

The LSU product was the second pick in last year’s draft and in a little over a year proved he is ready for the show. At AA, he hit .297/.415/.559 with 14 homers and 46 RBI in 62 games. In 18 games at AAA, Bregman hit .333/.373/.641 with six homers and 15 RBI.

Bregman is a natural shortstop, but because of Carlos Correa (I hear he’s really good), Bregman has been playing third and the outfield to get some versatility and get his bad in the lineup.

Bregman seemed ready for a while now and I’m glad he finally got the call. For the Astros, you get his bat in the lineup along with Correa, Jose Altuve and George Springer and you have a very young and exciting core to build around for years to come. You also don’t have to trade anyone if you need a bat and the Astros can instead look to getting another arm or two.
