When it comes to the shortstop position, the Houston Astros have historically struggled to find any offensive production. In fact, Carlos Correa already holds the career mark for home runs for an Astros shortstop.
In their 54 year history, the Houston Astros have had some stellar players with the bat. With players like Jeff Bagwell, Craig Biggio, Lance Berkman, Cesar Cedeno and Jimmy Wynn, amongst others, there has been a proud tradition of offensive excellence in Houston.
However, shortstop has been a black hole for the Astros for much of their history. While Dickie Thon could have been a star prior to his tragic beaning, Houston’s offensive production at short has been almost nonexistent. To punctuate how anemic the position has been, Adam Everett was the Astros career home run leader at short, despite hitting only 35 home runs in six years.

At least, that was the case until this weekend. In playing just over a season’s worth of games, the Houston Astros stellar young shortstop, Carlos Correa, has broken Everett’s mark. In 193 games heading into last night’s slate of action, Correa already has 37 career homers, making it highly likely that he will leave Everett and Thon far in the distance.
One of numerous young hitters that the Astros possess, Correa appears destined to be a star. He has already made his marks upon the record books, being the first native of Puerto Rico to be drafted with the first overall pick in the MLB Amateur Draft. He won the Rookie of the Year award last season, and has been compared favorably to Alex Rodriguez and Carlos Beltran. If his career follows along that arc, he could well prove to have quite the remarkable career.

Only 21 years old, Carlos Correa has plenty of time to make his assault on the Houston Astros record books. As it stands, he has already made his mark in one category, becoming the Astros all time home run leader at short.
