The Miami Marlins just finished a deal that brought them some much needed pitching help from San Diego. The Padres had originally sent the Marlins Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea. Colin Rea was injured quickly during his time with the Marlins and now the trade has been re-worked.
Ken Rosenthal has reported that the Padres will be receiving Colin Rea back in a newly worked trade in exchange for Luis Castillo, who was included in the original deal. Rosenthal also reports that Cashner is expected to remain with the Marlins and provide the expected starter help that they traded for.
This move comes as a bit of a surprise as it is a rare occasion that a trade is re-worked so shortly after it is sent through. It makes it even more surprising that the player involved is injured and not expected to be able to help the major league club for a while yet. The move shows that the Marlins are solely concerned with right now as they try to make a push for the postseason.

The acquisition of Cashner without Rea still boosts a staff that beyond Jose Fernandez was lacking any presence. The addition of Cashner is a welcome one that gives their postseason hopes a bit of a boost. The Marlins are currently four games behind Washington in the NL East and have a one game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals for the second wild card.
The addition of Castillo back into the Marlins system gives them back their number six prospect, which could end up helping the Marlins in the long-term. On San Diego’s revamped farm, Castillo was ranked as their number 15 prospect. This injury and expected trade could bring the Marlins back into the starting pitcher trade market. With only 2 hours to go until the trade deadline this could be a pre-cursor move to acquiring a starter to help anchor the rotation with Jose Fernandez.
The Marlins have been surprise contenders this year with both of their young outfielders enjoying breakout seasons at the plate. They are behind the division leading Nationals but still have a realistic shot of making the postseason by winning the division or taking one of the wildcard spots. This move shows the Marlins are ready to win now and could be on the lookout for more pitching depth in the coming hours.
