The Royals may also be a team that is looking into Ervin Santana. Santana was once a Royal in 2013 and was their no.2 starter behind James Shields. He went 9-10 with a 3.24 ERA as a Royal and would be reunited with a franchise that is trying to win the World Series for the 2nd straight season.

In order for any deal to happen with the Royals, the Twins would likely have to eat a good amount of Santana’s remaining contract. Given that no team claimed Santana as he went through waivers, it seems likely that the salary amount is the deterrent.

But, if the Royals do decide to make a move for Santana he would fit very nicely into their rotation. He would likely take Dillon Gee’s spot and possibly sit in front of Edinson Volquez for their playoff rotation.

Gee through 26 appearances has a 4.55 ERA in 99.0 innings pitched with a 5-7 win-loss record. Volquez has 27 starts with a 10-10 record and a 4.88 ERA and a 1.443 WHIP allowing 9.8 hits per 9 innings. Duffy, Ventura, and Kennedy are all solid but Santana would give the Royals a reliable 4th starter for their playoff rotation.

Another benefit of adding Santana for the Royals is that Volquez is eligible for free-agency this winter and Santana would be his replacement for the next two years while the Royals attempt to  maintain a playoff contending team in the upcoming seasons.
