Reactions to Tim Tebow’s workout were mixed, but he showed enough potential for several teams to be interested. Now, Tebow is set to begin his baseball journey, reportedly signing with the New York Mets.

Considering that he had not played baseball competitively since his junior year of high school, Tim Tebow had a relatively solid workout for scouts. Facing former Major League pitchers, he displayed solid power potential, and flashed some of the tools that made him an interesting prospect over a decade ago. Although reactions to his performance were mixed, Tebow flashed enough potential that eight teams were interested in signing the former quarterback.

This morning, the speculation is over. The New York Mets have signed Tebow to a minor league contract, where he will report to their Instructional League team in Port St. Lucie. From there, it could make sense for Tebow to play in the Winter Leagues, getting him a chance to see more live action and get used to playing baseball again after more than a decade away from the game.

While it makes a great deal of sense for a team to give Tebow a chance, the Mets seem to be a curious choice. They are currently overloaded on corner outfield/first base types. Although Tebow will take quite some time before the Majors are even a consideration, There just does not appear to be run for him as the Mets are currently constructed.

Nonetheless, Tebow is the ultimate lottery ticket. He does have some tools, and while he appeared stiff with his swing and did not run the best routes when tracking fly balls, he did pretty well for someone who had not played competitively since high school. With his proven track record as being coachable and willing to learn, there is a chance that Tebow could provide quite the return on investment.

Tim Tebow is a longshot to make the Majors, but he has been in that situation before as a quarterback. With the proper coaching, the New York Mets could find themselves pleasantly surprised by what Tebow turns into. Otherwise, they can cut their losses without any risk.
