One of the classic highlights in MLB history was the moment that Seattle Mariners teammates Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. homered in the same game. That moment happened on this day in 1990.
When the Seattle Mariners brought Ken Griffey Sr. into the fold, it was a great story. Paired with Ken Griffey Jr, the young phenom that the Mariners were hoping would blossom into a star, the Griffeys made history as the first father and son to play together on the same team. Had the story ended there, it would have made for a great ending for Griffey Sr’s career, and a fun way for Griffey Jr to get his feet wet in the Majors.
Instead, the duo teamed up for one of the more iconic moments in MLB history. On this day in 1990, father and son both homered in the same game for the Mariners, a 7-5 loss to the Angels. To make it even more impressive, the Griffeys homered in consecutive at bats.

They did not wait long to accomplish their historic moment, ambushing Angels starter Kirk McCaskill in the first. After a leadoff walk, KcCaskill had an 0-2 count on Griffey Sr before he lined a homer to left center. Griffey Jr followed, and was given the green light on 3-0. He then also belted a homer to left center, going back to back with his father .
It was the perfect moment for generations to come together. Griffey Sr was a solid player, a former All Star who had over 2000 hits in his career. Griffey Jr was the young star of the next generation, a kid who wore his hat backwards and was embraced by the youth. This moment was a symbolic passing of the torch, as the youthful Griffey literally followed in his father’s footsteps to hit a home run.
