Carlos Gonzalez hasn’t held any contract discussions with the Colorado Rockies, further clouding his future with the team. Will he be dealt before next year’s trade deadline?

The Colorado Rockies are in the midst of yet another middling season where they are already starting to focus on the seasons yet to come. One of the things that has been discussed recently is a possible extension for slugger Carlos Gonzalez, who has one season remaining on his deal.

When asked about the recent buzz about a possible new contract, Gonzalez put the rumors to rest. He wants to explore his free agency options despite the fact that he has let Colorado know that he like playing for the Rockies.

Moving to a new team would make sense for CarGo in a season or two, however. Colorado seems to be a team stuck in neutral and Gonzalez is a veteran player, and like any veteran player he wants to be where he feels he has the best chance to win. The Rockies may have to show some improvement in the coming season if they hope to keep their veteran slugger.

On the flip side, for the Rockies’ front office it may be time to consider letting Gonzalez move on. While he has had some great seasons with the Rockies, he will no doubt have a hefty price tag and it is not as if the Rockies have been having success with the slugger.

The Rockies team could look to benefit from Carlos Gonzalez having one year remaining on his deal next season. They could do that by trading him next season at the break for the thing that they need most: pitching.

While Jon Gray is expected to fill one of the five rotation spots, the rest of the rotation has a lot of questions. A quality hitter like Gonzalez could be used before next season’s trade deadline to both give him a chance on a competing team as well as acquire young pitching talent for Colorado.

The Rockies will be an interesting team to watch this offseason as to whether they choose to gear up to compete with the talent they have, or begin to rebuild. The answer should determine Gonzalez’s future with the Rockies.
