You know something? When you come right down to it, everyone (at least in New York) loved Alex Rodriguez. His teammates couldn’t say enough good things about him as a leader and great clubhouse guy. Yankee fans cheered his every at bat and usually they merely groaned instead of booing after one of his strikeouts leaving two men on. And most of all, the media loved him because they knew they would never suffer from writers block and there would always be a story involving A-Rod the next day- and the day after that.

Something had to give though, didn’t it? Rodriguez was an albatross for the Yankees. Speculation commanded the back pages throughout the spring and into the season itself. Girardi ran him out there again and again. A feeble four or five home runs and a batting average close to the Mendoza line and the die was cast. In the end, and except for the money owed to him, Rodriguez made the decision for the Yankees because it was painfully obvious to everyone, and especially to A-Rod himself, that he simply couldn’t play baseball any more.

And the rains came down on him in more ways than one on that Friday night when he hustled his daughters and mother out of the thunderstorm and into the safe haven of the Yankees dugout.

Yankee fans should stand up for Alex Rodriguez. He screwed up his baseball career and nobody knows it better than he does. That should be enough punishment in and of itself. Almost singlehanded, he gave the Yankees their last championship in 2009. But you say to yourself, “Gee, was it really that long ago?”

Yes, indeed it was. And that’s why the Yankees decided to cut ties with the past with Rodriguez being the signal that changes were coming…………And that brings us to……..
