Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jered Weaver has struggled over the past two seasons, no longer effective as his velocity has declined. Now, in the next few days, he will make a decision on his future.
It is hard to imagine that, just two years ago, Jered Weaver led the American League in wins. Although the Los Angeles Angels hurler had seen his velocity decrease dramatically, he remained effective. The Angels won the American League West that year, and it seemed as though Weaver may be able to morph into another Jamie Moyer type of hurler.
Well, Weaver became another Moyer, at least in terms of giving up the long ball. Dealing with back and hip issues over the past two years, Weaver has posted a 4.86 ERA and a 1.353 WHiP in the past two years, striking out only 193 batters in 337 innings. Those back issues reared their head again on Monday, leaving Weaver to ponder his future.

It is worth noting that Weaver intends on making his final start of the season for the Angels, and that he feels he can pitch again next season. However, given his recent injury history and lack of effectiveness, it is worth wondering exactly how much he could offer a team in 2017.
Weaver is also a free agent, as he is currently in the final few days of his five year, $85 Million contract. Making $20 Million this year, Weaver will have to take a much smaller deal next season if he intends on pitching in the coming season.
Of course, a few teams may well have interest in the Angels starter. He does have a track record of success in the not too distant past, and on a one year “make good” contract with a team option, he could be an attractive player in free agency. But is it worth the time and effort to come back, given his health issues?

Jered Weaver is facing a crossroads in his career in more than one way. The Los Angeles Angels hurler has a few decisions to make, and he might make the most important one soon.
