The tributes to Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez are continuing, as the Florida Panthers are the latest team to honor the late star.

When Jose Fernandez was killed in a tragic boating accident just a few short weeks ago, his passing was felt throughout baseball. Teams everywhere held moments of silence for the Miami Marlins fallen star, and jerseys dedicated to Martinez were in virtually every dugout. The Marlins, understandably, retired his number, making sure that 16 would remain his, and his alone.

Other teams in the Miami area honored the young star as well. The Miami Heat wore warmup shirts with JDF and his number 16, and the Miami Hurricanes had a helmet decal for Fernandez, showing that the sporting community in the area is one big family. Tonight, the Florida Panthers are taking their turn to honor Fernandez, as they will wear jerseys and helmet decals in memory of the Marlins pitcher.

These tributes, across all sports, just further underscore what he meant to his community. While he was taken away from the Marlins, and the world, at far too young an age, Fernandez made an impact. His joy on the mound, and his love of life, were evident in every moment.

It is also understandable that Miami teams would continue to honor Fernandez due to his impact in the community. His exuberance not only made him a fan favorite, but also drew young fans to the game. He was a positive influence in his community, a home town kid who made it to the Majors, and was one of the best in the game. He was someone that others could look to and aspire to become.

Given that impact, Fernandez’ memory will continue to live on. His life will continue to be honored across the spectrum in the sporting world, as he transcended any one league. He was an icon, a larger than life figure who, in essence, had become a large part of what the city of Miami was.

These celebrations not only serve to remind us of a life that was lost far too soon, but to allow us to reflect. Fernandez lived a life that gave joy to everyone around him, the type of life that makes a positive impact wherever he was.
