While the Chicago Cubs entered Spring Training as reigning World Series champions, a St. Louis-based sports blog is resisting the success of the Cardinals’ arch rival.

We have all heard of the rivalry between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Similarly, the heated competition between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers is renowned throughout sports.

Right alongside these two rivalries are the Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals, bitter enemies since 1892. After enjoying the upper hand in their rivalry for over 100 years, Cardinals fans are learning to cope with the shift of power in favor of the Cubs.

Some remain hopeful, despite watching the Cubs hoist the World Series trophy last November. However, others, such as the JoeSportsFan blog, are resisting.

“Welcome to the resistance,” the shirt’s description reads. “The Chicago Cubs are NOT my 2016 World Series Champions.”

According to their website, JoeSportsFan is a decorated sports blog “that has been a leader in online sports humor and fan merchandise since 2005.” Their most recent product is a shirt with “Not My World Champs” printed on the front.

While at the same time making a play on the recent political climate, JoeSportsFan hopes to see fellow fans don these shirts as the Cardinals host the Cubs on Opening Day.

Although the shirt holds more humorous value than serious resistance, historically speaking the Cardinals have little to complain about. Sure, their arch rival just won the World Series, but as the Cubs went without a championship for 108 years, the Cardinals won 11. Last season marked the first time since winning the World Series in 2011 that the Cardinals failed to reach the postseason.

With the Cardinals falling behind the Cubs for seemingly the first time in this long-standing rivalry, the bitterness between these two teams will only grow in 2017.
