Detroit Tigers Place Miguel Cabrera on 10-Day Disabled List
The Detroit Tigers have placed Miguel Cabrera on the 10-day disabled list. What will the team’s lineup look like without their starting first baseman?
Miguel Cabrera will have to sit out at least 10 days as the Detroit Tigers have placed their All-Star first baseman on the disabled list with a right groin strain.
Cabrera left the Tigers’ game yesterday with the injury and the team has not announced what the timetable will look like until the veteran slugger will be back on the field.
In a corresponding move, the Tigers have decided to call up catcher John Hicks from Triple-A. This seems like an odd promotion given the fact that Detroit doesn’t really have another first baseman immediately available on the roster to fill in for Cabrera.
However, Evan Woodberry, who covers the team for the MLive Media Group, tweeted that the decision to call up Hicks could signal that the Tigers may be planning on having backup catcher Alex Avila play first, while Hicks remains on the roster to back up James McCann behind the plate.

Even with this solution possibly in place, Miggy’s absence is no doubt a huge blow to a Detroit team that has looked pretty good over the first 16 games of the regular season.
Although the two-time AL MVP started the season slowly, going without a hit in his first four games of 2017, Cabrera had to begun to find his footing as of late.
Currently, Miggy owns a .369 on-base percentage and has hit three homers through 16 games with the Tigers this season. With him out, players like Nick Castellanos, Justin Upton, Ian Kinsler and eventually J.D. Martinez, who apparently took on-field batting practice a few days ago according to Lynn Henning of The Detroit News, are going to have to pick up the slack in the coming weeks.
This unfortunate development will certainly be an early-season test to see if the Tigers can stay afloat in Miggy’s absence with the hopes of getting back into the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
