The New York Mets continue to hope that David Wright can return to the field and provide needed production in their lineup. That just may never happen.

Since the start of the 2015 campaign, David Wright has totaled 75 games with the New York Mets. Plagued by a variety of injuries, including spinal and neck issues, Wright has been unable to remain on the field. And yet, every season, there is that hope that he will come back, be healthy, and play in at least 120 games for the Mets.

Those hopes were there at the beginning of this season as well. However, the dream of a healthy Wright manning third ended during the first couple of weeks of Spring Training. A shoulder issue put Wright back on the disabled list, and he has struggled to begin his rehab, having been shut down twice already.

Now, we can add a third time. The Mets have shut down Wright’s throwing program yet again, and it is unknown as to when he will resume throwing. As it stands, the only thing that appears to be certain is that it will not happen in the near future, as Wright’s season may well be in jeopardy.

More from Call to the Pen

It is safe to say that the Mets have received virtually nothing for the $60 Million they have paid Wright over the past three seasons. However, if he does not return before the 60 game mark, the Mets will get 75% of his salary back from insurance. So, at least they have that to look forward to.

Meanwhile, it is safe to say that the Mets should not be counting on Wright at this stage of his career. Yes, he may be able to find his way back to the field at some point, but for how long? And even if Wright is healthy, can the Mets count on him to play every day? At this point, a best casse scenario may be for Wright to play two out of every three games, allowing enough time off to make sure those health issues do not resurface.

Unfortunately, the Mets need Wright back as soon as possible. Jose Reyes has struggled this season, and the depth behind him at third has been a disaster. Wright, if healthy, would be a significant upgrade at third. The problem is, the Mets cannot count on a return any time in the near future.

David Wright had another setback in his recovery from his shoulder impingement. At this point, one has to wonder if the New York Mets third baseman will return to the field this season.
