Chicago White Sox to call up Yoan Moncada
The Chicago White Sox have just completed a big deal with the New York Yankees, trading away David Robertson, Tommy Kahnle and Todd Frazier, but they’re also going to be calling up top prospect Yoan Moncada ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Dodgers.
In terms of teams currently rebuilding, the Chicago White Sox have been one of the best in acquiring top talent for their trade pieces. On Wednesday night we’ll get to see arguably their most exciting addition since the fire sale started last winter with the arrival of Yoan Moncada.
Moncada has been in Triple-A with the Charlotte Knights all year and started the season off with a bang, hitting .312 with a .401 OBP through the first two months of the season. Moncada has missed a little time this season due to injury, which could explain some of his struggles in June and July. For the season he is now batting .282 with a .377 OBP, 12 homers, 36 RBI and 17 steals in 25 chances.

Over his last ten games, Moncada is 10-for-35 (.286) with 13 strikeouts against four walks. The reason the 22-year-old has been in Charlotte this season had been in the minors was to work on cutting down on his strikeout rate, which he has a little bit this season. In Double-A last season in the Red Sox system, Moncada struck out 30.9% of the time, and this season that rate is 28.6%. Baby steps!
On the bright side, he also has a wRC+ of 132 this season, so while his production isn’t quite at the level of previous seasons, he has been very productive in the highest level of minor league ball. We’ll definitely see some growing pains as he adjusts, and likely a strikeout or two, but he has the talent to be a franchise-altering player.
Brad Goldberg, the other player coming up for Wednesday’s game, is a right-handed pitcher that has actually been with Chicago ever-so-briefly this season. He recorded an out back on June 3 in Detroit. In the process of recording that out he also gave up a walk and three hits and all four came around to score, giving Goldberg a 108.00 ERA.

Yoan Moncada is the face of the White Sox rebuild. Many of the other top players the team has acquired have been pitchers, and Moncada is easily the best of their position player prospects. We’ll now get to see some of the White Sox future, even while they’re simultaneously making moves to acquire more prospects.
