New York Mets Zack Wheeler Back On Disabled List

Zack Wheeler has plenty of potential, and has displayed that at times for the New York Mets. With another stint on the disabled list forthcoming, it may be fair to wonder if he will ever be the player they envisioned.
Prior to being sidelined with Tommy John surgery, Zack Wheeler was one of the promising young arms on the New York Mets. He was expected to be a key part of that youthful rotation, all growing together and becoming stars in the Big Apple. Wheeler, along with his fellow starters, were destined to make the Mets a perennial contender.
After his promising 2014 campaign, Wheeler missed the next two seasons due to Tommy John surgery and his slow recovery from the procedure. He made just one minor league appearance last year before being shut down, and continued to have issues with his elbow during Spring Training. However, he managed to start the season healthy, and even had a few solid outings.
Then came the injuries. Around a bout of complete ineffectiveness, Wheeler had a stint on the disabled list due to biceps tendonitis. After four mostly mediocre starts since his return, Wheeler is heading back to the disabled list, this time with a stress reaction in his right arm. In a related move, the Mets recalled Tyler Pill to take his spot on the roster.

Essentially, based on the medical dictionary definition of a stress reaction, it is similar to a stress fracture, only without the break. This reaction is caused by continuous overload in high impact exercise. And, in the case of the righty Wheeler, the exertion and torque needed to throw a baseball.
An injury would certainly explain Wheeler’s issues this season. In his 86.1 innings over 17 starts, Wheeler has posted a 3-7 record with a 5.21 ERA and a 1.587 WHiP, striking out 81 batters with 40 walks. While his command has been shaky at times throughout his career, Wheeler had the stuff to limit the damage. Now, he is giving up more than a hit an inning, and paying the price for those walks.
At this point, it is not clear as to when Wheeler will return from the disabled list. It is also unclear as to whether or not the Mets can count on him going forward. With two different arm injuries this season, as well as his slow recovery from Tommy John surgery last year due to various complications, paint a concerning picture.
Zack Wheeler is certainly talented. The New York Mets just have to wonder if their oft-injuried pitcher will ever reach his potential.
