One would have imagined that after Yadier Molina hit his grand slam on Wednesday that Rally Cat would live a life of luxury in the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse. Instead, they somehow managed to lose their feline fan.

Every so often, a baseball game is interrupted by some critter loose on the diamond. There are a few moments of humor as the befuddled grounds crew attempt to corral the creature before sending it on its way. And, seemingly every time, the home team manages to rally to win the game.

That was the case again on Wednesday as the Kansas City Royals and St. Louis Cardinals faced off. With the Royals holding a 5-4 lead, a small stray cat ended up finding its way into the outfield. The game was delayed as the Cardinals grounds crew worked to corral the feline, eventually doing so. Just moments later, Yadier Molina hit a grand slam, giving the Cardinals an 8-5 lead they would not relinquish.

As this occurred on National Cat Day, it was the perfect opportunity for the Cardinals to adopt a pet. Rally Cat could have hung around the clubhouse, making appearances whenever St. Louis needed a spark. Instead, the latest Rally Animal has gone missing, and the story surrounding it is fairly bizarre.

More from Call to the Pen

The staffer that corralled the stray feline, Lucas Hackmann, brought the cat to the area around Gate 3 and the Stan Musial statue. Dealing with multiple scratches and bites, he put the cat down to get first aid. The ushers were unable to contain the cat, and a fan wandering by grabbed the stray. After a few questions, she left, intending to take care of the cat, but lost it in City Gardens. Strange indeed.

First off, why go all the way to Gate 3 with the cat? Surely there was another place that one could have brought the feline, ensuring that it was taken care of while attending to one’s injuries. Putting a scared feline in an open area with a lot of people is a purrfect way to lose the cat.

Second, how did that one fan manage to just take the cat and leave? Considering that numerous ushers were trying to corral the cat, and she was able to just walk up and take it, that seems strange. Maybe she’s a cat whisperer. Or, this lady who really likes cats.

And third, how did the cat get there in the first place? Maybe it was an innocent mistake, a hungry feline hearing the Cardinals were in town and looking for a tasty dinner. However, instead of finding a tasty bird to snack on, the cat found itself in the midst of a baseball game.

Hopefully, the St. Louis Cardinals can find their Rally Cat. And maybe Rally Cat can find a Cardinal to snack on.
