Toronto Blue Jays Could Shop Josh Donaldson During Offseason
The Toronto Blue Jays horrendous 2017 campaign could lead to major changes for next year. One of those changes could involve Josh Donaldson, who the Blue Jays are expected to put on the trading block.
It has been a difficult season for the Toronto Blue Jays. They expected to contend for the American League East, but instead find themselves languishing in the basement. After selling off some pieces during the trade deadline, it seems as though the Blue Jays will be looking to rebuild for the future.
That decision could well impact the future of their star third baseman Josh Donaldson. Although he has dealt with injuries this year, he has been one of the few bright spots on the disappointing Blue Jays. Thus far, Donaldson has produced a solid .258/.382/.526 batting line, hitting 24 home runs. A free agent after the 2018 season, he could be a solid trade chip at next year’s trade deadline, or a key piece in the lineup should the Blue Jays contend.
However, according to Nick Cafardo, it would not be a surprise if the Blue Jays move Donaldson this offseason. For his solid performance in the batter’s box, there have been some troubling signs. Cafardo pointed out that Donaldson not only no longer appears willing to go all out for foul balls near the stands, but does not run out ground balls as well.

Normally, this would not be a concern. As players get older, they pick and choose their spots so as to save wear and tear on their bodies. Given Donaldson’s injury woes earlier this season, it would make sense if he is taking things a bit easy in order to be fully healthy for next year.
Based on Cafardo’s article, that does not appear to be the sentiment in Toronto. Instead, it sounds as though his determination and desire to be with the Blue Jays is being called into question. The thought seems to be that the seven year veteran does not want to be a part of a rebuild, and wants to be elsewhere.
It would be difficult to replace Donaldson in the lineup. A three time All Star, two time Silver Slugger winner, and former MVP, Donaldson is still in his prime. He could bring back a significant haul of prospects, but the Blue Jays would need to commit to a rebuilding process, something they have been reluctant to embrace.
The Toronto Blue Jays may look to move Josh Donaldson during the offseason. If they do, there may be quite a few interested suitors.
