One of the best all around hitters in the history of the game, there is no question that Robin Yount is the greatest player in the history of the Milwaukee Brewers. On this day in 1992, Yount became the 17th member of the 3000 hit club.

When thinking back as to the greatest players in Milwaukee Brewers history, Robin Yount immediately comes to mind. He was a standout in Milwaukee, winning two MVP awards and being named the 1982 American League MVP.

Yet, despite his success on the diamond, he was often overlooked. Yount made only three All Star Games, in large part due to the miserable Brewers teams he was a part of. Possessing a solid amount of power and excellent speed, he led the American League twice in both doubles and triples, with double digit steals in all but four years of his career.

On this day in 1992, Yount could no longer be overlooked. The Brewers star had been 0-3 with two strikeouts heading into the bottom the seventh, when he ripped a Jose Mesa pitch for a line drive over second base for a base hit, the 3000th of his career. With that single, Yount became the 17th member of the 3000 hit club.

Yount also joined another exclusive club as well. He became the second player in baseball history with 200 homers, 200 steals, and 100 triples in the 3000 hit club, joining Willie Mays. That well rounded production helped illustrate the type of player that Yount had been throughout his career.

He played for one more season before unexpectedly retiring at the end of 1993. Overall, in his 20 years, Yount produced a solid .285/.342/.430 batting line, hitting 253 homers and stealing 271 bases. Although he was not the same player he had been in his prime, it was expected that Yount would play for a few more seasons when he called it quits. Had he done so, Yount may well have become a member of the 300-300 club.
