Jose Reyes Wants to Finish Career with New York Mets

NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 08: Jose Reyes

Jose Reyes is looking to finish his career with the New York Mets. The Mets, meanwhile, are not exactly on board with this proposal.

During the early part of the 2017 campaign, New York Mets infielder Jose Reyes appeared to be done. He had produced a meager .186/.261/.286 batting line through June 15, hitting three homers and stealing only ten bases. A shadow of the exciting player he was in his first stint with the Mets, it appeared to be a matter of time until Reyes was released.

Since then, the Mets infielder has turned his season around. No longer a black hole in the lineup, the 34 year old has begun to hit like he once did. Since that brutal start to the season, Reyes has posted a solid .294/.355/.521 batting line, hitting nine homers. Unfortunately, the speed element of his game has been missing, with just nine steals in 13 attempts.

Nonetheless, Reyes’ Lazurus like rise from the grave has been impressive, showing there is life still in his bat. This has also led Reyes to state that he is hoping to end his career with the Mets, although the team is not exactly on board with this idea. Yet, the fact that the Mets have not outright refused the idea is a bit of a victory for Reyes.

More from Call to the Pen

The problem with bringing back Reyes is that the Mets may not have a spot for him on the roster. Asdrubal Cabrera and/or the corpse of David Wright are likely to man third base. Amed Rosario is expected to be the Mets shortstop for years to come. Wilmer Flores or T.J. Rivera may be the second baseman, with the other serving as a utility infielder. Of course, that depends on whether or not the Mets look to add another infielder during free agency.

Nonetheless, there simply is not a place for Reyes on the 2018 Mets, at least just yet. If New York decides to decline Cabrera’s $8.5 Million option and give him $2 Million to go away, there may be a place for Reyes. However, the Mets could well look to trade for, or sign, a third baseman instead.

Jose Reyes is hoping to end his career with the New York Mets. As much of a long shot as that appears to be, the odds are much better than they were three months ago.
