David Price has been in the midst of an injury plagued 2017 campaign, but he may be able to contribute to the Boston Red Sox down the stretch.
The idea of David Price starting a meaningful game for the Boston Red Sox is enough to make Red Sox Nation break out in hives. Their prized free agent acquisition following the 2015 campaign has been a disappointment, performing more as a middle of the rotation innings eater than a staff ace.
The hope that Price would return to form this season was quickly dashed. He has struggled through an injury plagued year, making just 11 appearances. While his 3.82 ERA and 1.273 WHiP are solid, it is difficult to find a Red Sox fan that would have confidence in Price down the stretch. Add in his abysmal postseason track record, and it would seem doubtful that Price could contribute down the stretch.
And yet, the Red Sox may have found a way to let him do just that. Price is set to be activated from the disabled list, but will head to a role in the bullpen instead of the rotation. Right now, the plan is for Price to be used over multiple innings, perhaps in a similar method as Andrew Miller was used by Cleveland last year.

It is a move that makes sense. As Price is dealing with soreness in his elbow, which is exacerbated by throwing breaking pitches, he can focus on his fastball and cutter. He could let loose, potentially turning into a vital weapon in the later innings during the Red Sox push for the postseason.
This move could even help in the playoffs. Price had success in a relief role for the Rays as a rookie in 2008, helping bring Tampa Bay to their only World Series appearance. Should he find that same success in the bullpen, it may help him get over whatever mental block he has in the postseason. If not, then it will be a lot easier for John Farrell to give Price a quick hook.

David Price is set to return for the Boston Red Sox. This stint in the bullpen may be the perfect move for the rest of the year.
