Kansas City Royals

The general consensus suggests the Kansas City Royals have very little, if any, interest in spending lots of money this offseason. That’s only because three of their core players are expected to receive large free agent salaries. This trio consists of Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain. The Royals can’t keep them all, but there are viable MLB options out there that are far less costly to help them stay competitive.

If Hosmer or Moustakas walk, the Royals will have an opening at the corner infield positions. Headley can play both spots, allowing the Royals some flexibility.

A quick offseason trade for Headley will give the Royals a chance to go the cheaper route when finding the next corner infielder to pair him with. Since they do have a few minor leaguers knocking on the big league door, it’s always possible we see Headley find a spot at third base with only the occasional start at first base should they fail.

In terms of money, Headley costs only $13 million in 2018. This is smaller than the annual salary Hosmer or Moustakas will earn. It’s also very possible the Yankees don’t ask for much in return for Headley. The Royals can acquire a talented veteran for one year and see if they’re able to fill other holes around him. The worst thing that can happen is they trade Headley next deadline to a team with a greater need.
