Free agency is rapidly approaching for Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder J.D. Martinez. On the eve of a potentially large payday, he has changed representation.

Chances are, when Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder J.D. Martinez officially becomes a free agent, he will have quite the list of suitors. It is easy to understand why, as the former Astros castoff had the best year of his career thus far in 2017. Splitting his time between the Diamondbacks and the Tigers, Martinez posted a .303/.376/.690 batting line, belting 45 homers and driving in 104 runs. He had the highest slugging percentage in the majors, and was third in homers. Not bad considering he missed the first five weeks with a foot injury.

Understandably, Martinez will be looking to maximize his earning potential on the open market. After all, even with the possibly juiced ball and record home run season in 2017, sluggers like Martinez are still relatively rare. Perhaps, with that in mind, Martinez has changed his agent while on the cusp of free agency, hiring Scott Boras as his new agent.

This change does make sense. Boras has a well earned reputation for attempting to get every last coin out of teams during free agency. While Martinez would likely do well for himself monetarily this offseason, joining forces with Boras certainly helps that earning potential.

Martinez is just the latest free agent prize this offseason to be a part of Boras’ stable. Mike Moustakas, Eric Hosmer, and Jake Arrieta are also represented by the super agent. At this point, it is fair to say that Boras will be setting the market for the offseason, as he controls majority of the top players available.
