Former Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies star Roy Halladay has passed away, killed when his airplane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. He was only 40 years old.

Earlier today, it was announced that an airplane registered to Roy Halladay had crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. Details were scarce at the time of the incident, as everyone hoped for the best. Eventually, it was learned that there was a fatality in the accident, although the identity of the deceased was unknown. There was speculation that the pilot was former Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies star Roy Halladay, but nothing had been confirmed.

Now, we have confirmation. According to the Pasco County Sherriff’s Department, Halladay is confirmed to have perished in the accident. He was only 40 years old.

According to the reports, the Sherriff’s Office Marine Department received a call at noon that an airplane that was identified as Halladay’s was upside down in shallow water. Despite the recovery efforts of the Marine Department, Halladay had passed away in the accident.

The investigation into the circumstances of the crash will be ongoing, with the FAA looking to determine what happened leading up to those final moments.

More from Call to the Pen

During his 16 years with the Blue Jays and the Phillies, Halladay was a star. He was an eight time All Star, and won two Cy Young awards. He became the second pitcher to throw a no hitter in the postseason, doing so in his very first playoff start, and earlier that year, threw the 20th perfect game in baseball history.

Overall, he posted a 203-105 record, along with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.178 WHiP, striking out 2117 batters against 592 walks in 2749.1 innings. Those numbers may have been even better had back issues not prematurely ended his career.

They say that legends never die. They may pass on from the mortal coil, but their stories remain behind. Their names and exploits live on, mentioned in tones of reverence. For Blue Jays and Phillies fans, as well as fans of the game in general, Roy Halladay will continue to live on, his stellar career continuing to speak for itself.
