St. Louis Cardinals rumors: Are they not done with Rosenthal?
St. Louis Cardinals rumors: They have released their former All-Star closer, Trevor Rosenthal. But, things may not be as they seem.
St. Louis Cardinals rumors have been flying around since the release of their former All-Star closer, Trevor Rosenthal. But, things may not be as they seem.
With the unknown lingering effects of Tommy John surgery hanging in the balance, the St. Cardinals released 2015 All-Star closer Trevor Rosenthal on Monday.
Now a free agent, Rosenthal can now sign with any MLB team, with this move surrendering the 2018 rights the Cardinals had on the flame-thrower.
On the surface, it seems like the St. Louis Cardinals plan to cut their losses and move on, but that may not be the case. In fact, if Rosenthal decides to not sign with another team, he may resign with his former squad at a later.
The reason for this would allow the Cardinals the option to save money in 2018, as well as possibly bring back Rosenthal once they know the effectiveness of the medical procedure.
CBS Sports reports how contracts of players coming off of Tommy John actually work:

St. Louis Cardinals rumor are floating around that they are also in pursuit of Greg Holland, who declined the $15 million option offered to him by his former club.
A wise, and fair move, by the St. Louis Cardinals, who keep their options and pocketbook open, while not burning any bridges in the process.
Even if the St. Louis Cardinals rumors of signing the likes of Holland or even Juan Nicasio, having Rosenthal for the stretch run of 2017 or also 2018 would be a wise move.

Rosenthal’s best MLB season was the before mentioned 2015 campaign, where he boasted 48 saves, an ERA of 2.42, and an 83/25 SO to base on ball ration.
A reliever who can still hit triple digits, who has experience and an All-Star selection notch on his belt would be a smart decision. Plus, you’d be doing so at a low price. That’s what you call a classic win-win(win!). Hopefully these St. Louis Cardinals rumors are true, where Rosey will stay in the STL for good.
