Back to the Big Apple

Castro may not have to say goodbye to the Big Apple for long. The New York Mets are a nice fit for the still relatively young middle infielder. The Mets could use a second baseman, specifically one with speed. While no longer the stolen base threat he was briefly early in his career, Castro is a good option for the Mets whether they are looking for a short-term option during a retooling phase or one to help them win sooner.

Because the Marlins haven’t really gotten to know Castro well yet, I don’t see them shying away from trading him within the division. If it means taking $10 million off the books and adding a prospect, I see them doing it.

The Mets are in a strange spot. They could go full rebuild or quickly get things back in order for next season. They lost a lot of players in 2017 to trades and free agency. Thankfully, many were parts they needed to move on from. If the rotation can stay healthy, it’s possible they are back in the playoff hunt as soon as 2018.

As a big market team, the Mets certainly have the resources to pay for Castro. Perhaps, they even have the willingness and assets to acquire Marcell Ozuna or Christian Yelich. The Mets should at least talk with the Fish about it. Catcher J.T. Realmuto would look really good behind the plate at CitiField in a Mets’ uniform, too.
