There are likely to be plenty of New York Mets rumors this offseason. Current speculation involves the Mets putting former ace Matt Harvey on the trade block.
It would make sense that there would be plenty of New York Mets rumors this offseason. The Mets are coming off of a difficult 2017 campaign, going 69-93 as they were unable to find anything resembling a healthy pitching staff. Considering the high hopes the Mets had entering the season, the 2017 campaign was an abject disappointment.
Perhaps no player symbolized that disappointment quite like Matt Harvey. The ace of the Mets during their World Series run in 2015, Harvey has struggled over the past two seasons. He had lost some of his velocity in 2016, and appeared out of shape as he tired early in games. Harvey would eventually undergo surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome, leading to his horrendous 2017 performance.
Given the Mets pitching depth, it is understandable that they would look to move on from Harvey. Unsurprisingly, he is reportedly on the trade block, with the Mets having discussed the former ace with two different franchises, with the Mets looking for bullpen help or a second baseman. One of those teams, the Texas Rangers, have already refused to trade former top prospect Jurickson Profar for Harvey.

The Mets relatively high asking price for Harvey seems unlikely to be met. His 5-7 record, along with a 6.70 ERA and a 1.694 WHiP is hardly the type of performance to inspire confidence. Likewise, Harvey has also undergone Tommy John surgery in addition to his procedure to correct his thoracic outlet syndrome in 2016. This is not exactly the profile of someone that would garner a significant return.
However, there is the possibility that a change of scenery would do wonders for Harvey. It was thought that he enjoyed the nightlife a little too much after the Mets World Series run, and his time in New York has started to turn toxic. Yet, despite his struggles and rough performance last year, Harvey still threw his fastball in the mid 90s. A new start, even for just that one year, could help rejuvenate his career.
The latest new York Mets rumors have Matt Harvey on the trading block. If they can find a trading partner, he could be a nice buy low candidate.
