Minnesota Twins reportedly moving closer to signing Mike Napoli
The “Party at Napoli’s” may be changing locations yet again for 2018, as the Minnesota Twins are reportedly closing in on signing the veteran first baseman.
The Minnesota Twins are looking to be active this offseason. They have been considered a potential landing spot for two of the top free agent pitchers in Yu Darvish and Jake Arrieta. Minnesota signed Fernando Rodney in a move to bolster their bullpen, adding depth and an experienced closer to the mix.
However, the Twins are not going to be content with just the addition of Rodney and being linked to two of the top pitchers in free agency. They are also looking to solidify their bench, and are reportedly moving closer to inking first baseman Mike Napoli to a contract.

This is not the first time that the Twins were linked to Napoli, as they attempted to sign him prior to last season. Minnesota dodged a bullet that time, as the slugging first baseman produced a mediocre .193/.285/.428 batting line in 485 plate appearances for Texas last season. However, he also hit 29 homers, and would give the Twins a viable power threat off the bench.
Minnesota also covets Napoli for his clubhouse presence. He has been through the playoff battles before, with eight trips to the postseason, and a World Series victory with the Red Sox in 2013. For a young team looking to take that next step, and erase a recent past filled with postseason failure, a player like Napoli could make a difference.
Of course, the Twins are hoping that Napoli would be more than a veteran presence in the clubhouse. Although first base is blocked by Joe Mauer, Napoli could fill in on the field and as the Twins designated hitter a few times a week. As his power is still intact, he could give the offense a dimension that had been lacking at times during the 2017 campaign.
The Minnesota Twins are reportedly ramping up their discussions with Mike Napoli. He could end up being exactly the veteran leader and bench player the team needs.
