SAN FRANCISCO, CA - AUGUST 31: Mark Melancon

A San Francisco Giants fan on Twitter had a specific Christmas wish. Closer Mark Melanson took notice.

It was a rough first season with the San Francisco Giants for closer Mark Melancon. After signing a four year deal worth $62 Million, he did not look like the All Star closer the Giants thought they had acquired. After blowing a save in his first appearance, and dealing with injuries, the 2017 campaign led to a performance that he would likely want to forget. Melancon had a 4.50 ERA and a 1.433 WHiP, notching 11 saves in 16 chances.

Naturally, such a performance is not likely to endear any new player to the fanbase. Giants fans took their frustrations out on the closer, with one fan even going as far as to say that her Christmas wish was for Melancon to be traded when he asked what the fanbase wanted for the holiday. Naturally, he took notice.

Well, we all cannot get everything we want for the holidays. Personally, I’m still waiting for that Ferrari I keep asking for, but after 20 some odd years, I’m still waiting. As Melancon was not traded, Sue also knows the disappointment of not getting that one thing desired most for Christmas.

Of course, all it takes to reverse that desire for Melancon to be traded would be a strong season. The Giants are entering an even year, and as we have seen this decade, magical things happen in even numbered years for them. Perhaps, that even number magic will rear up once more, and a healthy Giants team will fight their way back to the postseason.

If that is to happen, Melancon may end up being a key part of that turnaround. He had been a strong closer during his time with the Pirates and Nationals, a four year run that led to a 1.80 ERA and a 0.914 WHiP, as he notched 147 saves. Melancon had earned three All Star nods, and led the league with 51 saves in 2015. At just 33 years old at the start of the season, Melancon could easily change the narrative about him in San Francisco.
