New York Mets need a new calendar in their front office

NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 27: Jose Reyes
NEW YORK, NY - SEPTEMBER 27: Jose Reyes

The New York Mets have continued to build a team that seems likely to contend…in 2013.

It has been an interesting offseason for the New York Mets. They entered free agency looking for several pieces to their lineup, as they had several holes in the infield and were in need of a power bat. They solved one part of their shopping list by adding Jay Bruce on a three year contract, giving them another power threat in the lineup.

The infield, on the other hand, has not had the same caliber of player added to it. Adrian Gonzalez was signed on a minimum contract, and is expected to be the Opening Day first baseman. David Wright still thinks he can play and be a starting third baseman. New York has continued to add to their infield by signing Jose Reyes to a one year deal to serve as a utility infielder.

More from Call to the Pen

After a miserable start to the season, Reyes managed to salvage some value in 2017. In his 561 plate appearances, Reyes had a decent .246/.315/.413 batting line, hitting 15 homers and stealing 24 bases. A great deal of that production came in the second half, especially as Reyes finally received some luck with the batted ball.

Even with that production in the second half, Reyes is not the player he had once been. Gonzalez is not even close, as some were wondering if his career was over after an injury plagued 2017. Wright has appeared in 75 games since the end of 2014. It makes one wonder if the Mets calendar has not changed since 2013.

And why stop there? The Mets could use a second baseman, so they could put Reyes back at the keystone. In that case, Everth Cabrera could be an option as a utility infielder. Or, they could sign Jesse Crain to shore up the bullpen. Here come your 2013 champions – the New York Mets!

Next: Patience needed with Mets

The Mets have brought back Jose Reyes. This signing, coupled with the acquisition of Adrian Gonzalez, are the types of moves that would excite a fanbase – in 2013. Someone remind New York what year it is.
