The Philadelphia Eagles won their first Super Bowl this week. For the Philadelphia Phillies, there’s no reason to feel jealous. In fact, it could help them succeed.

The city of Philadelphia recently celebrated their first Super Bowl victory. The Philadelphia Eagles managed to hold off the New England Patriots for four quarters, 60 minutes, and one very close game. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies gear up for a season that will unlikely end with a second parade down Broad Street. Not quite ready to compete, the championship in Philadelphia can still help the Phillies in other ways.

Attracting Free Agents

Free agents don’t have many reasons to sign with the Phillies. Until they add more veterans or the kids start winning, it’s not a locker room many might want to spend their twilight years. This could soon change.

In all four major sports, the vibe in Philadelphia is routinely negative. The championship-starved city ate a big meal for the first time in a decade. This hardly helps the city’s poor history of coming up short of winning it all.

However, things are changing. The Eagles are champions. The Philadelphia 76ers have also created a culture that could attract young free agents. As for the Philadelphia Flyers, they regularly compete and have their own undeniable yet sometimes brutal charm.

Next winter, the Phillies should be in the mix to sign Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. Will a recent championship and a more positive environment help attract them?

In a few years, this Super Bowl victory could factor into Eagles fan Mike Trout’s decision. Although, I suspect he wants to return home regardless of what the Eagles are up to.

No Reason to Feel Jealous

There is no reason for the Phillies to feel any jealousy toward the Eagles. Ten years ago, they brought home a World Series. A decade later, the Eagles got their opportunity.

The Phillies and Eagles play in the same sports complex. As such, the winning ways tend to get contagious. This is truer now than ever before. Social media plays a huge role in connecting stars from all four teams. Rhys Hoskins and J.P. Crawford have attended 76ers games. NBA star Joel Embiid often shows up to see his fellow Philadelphia athletes play, too.

The timing is perfect for the Phillies to capitalize on this victory by the Eagles. A rarity in Philadelphia, the town has a winning atmosphere. It’s time for the Phillies to catch this contagious disease and turn their fortunes around.
