The Texas Rangers have plenty of names that are known for their ability to swing the bat. While the bats were apparently not strong last season, the Rangers are looking to power it up this season. While the position of designated hitter hasn’t been discussed much, it’s an essential piece in the lineup.
Shin-Soo Choo, Joey Gallo, Rougned Odor, Willie Calhoun, Nomar Mazara, and Adrian Beltre are expected to spend some time this season serving as the designated hitter. Texas Rangers Manager Jeff Banister can name a rotation for the Designated Hitter position. It’s about giving everyone an opportunity.
At the moment, it’s unclear who’ll play what because everyone has to earn their role. It all depends on results this Spring Training. In baseball, decisions are always to be made based on results. No one’s guaranteed anything.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Choo spent a majority of his playing time this season serving as DH. Shoo has played right field his entire career, but because he’s aged and the Rangers have Mazara in Right Field, it’s ideal for Choo to serve as DH. In Choo’s case, it could spare him the injuries, and the Rangers desperately need Choo to stay healthy.
According to Gerry Fraley, the Rangers are better off keeping Choo at the DH position, but then again there are other names that will need time at that position, too. But Choo has to be considered the favorite to be named designated hitter on the Opening Day roster.
