New York Yankees spring training camp does not open for another week but Call to the Pen is already on the scene. And we start with pitching coach Larry Rothschild.
New York Yankees fans have been waiting since last October for February to arrive. With hopes held high, their eyes are focused on Tampa and Himes Avenue. There, just waking up from their long winter’s nap, are the Yankees’ coaches and players.
Call to the Pen is already there.
Here, for instance, is an interview today with Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild. The quality is not consistent throughout, but at least there is video. For you impatient fans, here are just a few of the highlights.
The Art of Saying Nothing
Larry would love to see the Yankees add another pitcher, but he is happy with the talent they have. Okay, that is not actually news, but it still was nice to speak with the man.
The same is true for his concerns about Luis Severino’s innings: There is some cautiousness, but the team has a plan.
"“We’re here to try to win and whatever that’s going to take… That’s up to him and how comfortable he gets.”"

I asked him if he thought Domingo Acevedo could best serve the 2018 Yankees out of the pen. Would you like to guess his answer? If you said non-committal, you’re right! He, of course, will need to see him pitch in person but the team would like Ace to remain a starter.
Fair enough. The fans probably do, too.
But the best part is that you don’t have to take my word for it. Here is almost the complete conversation. Appearing in the video to my left is Eric Boland of Newsday, while on my right is Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. Those two, along with me, are the only two reporters in Tampa right now.
This was my first attempt at recording, and it is just okay. In my very next post, I will break-down the entire conversation with Luis Severino.
